Rainbow Springs State Park

Rainbow Springs has been a cherished natural landmark in Florida for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence shows that people have lived along the Rainbow River for over 10,000 years, drawn to its crystal-clear waters and abundant wildlife.

In the early 20th century, the area became a popular private attraction. By the 1930s, Rainbow Springs was developed into a roadside theme park featuring glass-bottom boat tours, a zoo, a rodeo, and man-made waterfalls to enhance the already stunning natural scenery. For decades, it was a beloved stop for travelers exploring Florida.

However, as major theme parks like Disney World rose to prominence in the 1970s, Rainbow Springs fell into decline and eventually closed in 1974. The land sat unused until local citizens rallied to protect and restore it. Thanks to their efforts, the state acquired the property, and in 1990 Rainbow Springs was officially reopened as a Florida State Park.

Today, the park stands as both a natural wonder and a testament to community preservation, offering visitors the chance to enjoy its springs, gardens, and trails much like generations before them.
